وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أُمَمٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم بِٱلْبَأْسَآءِ وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَضَرَّعُونَ
اور ہم نے اور امتوں کی طرف بھی جو کہ آپ سے پہلے گزر چکی ہیں پیغمبر بھیجے تھے، سو ہم نے ان کو تنگدستی اور بیماری سے پکڑا تاکہ وه اﻇہار عجز کرسکیں۔
And We have already sent [messengers] to nations before you, [O Muḥammad]; then We seized them with poverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves [to Us].
ثُمَّ بَدَّلْنَا مَكَانَ ٱلسَّيِّئَةِ ٱلْحَسَنَةَ حَتَّىٰ عَفَوا۟ وَّقَالُوا۟ قَدْ مَسَّ ءَابَآءَنَا ٱلضَّرَّآءُ وَٱلسَّرَّآءُ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
پھر ہم نے اس بدحالی کی جگہ خوش حالی بدل دی، یہاں تک کہ ان کو خوب ترقی ہوئی اور کہنے لگے کہ ہمارے آباواجداد کو بھی تنگی اور راحت پیش آئی تھی تو ہم نے ان کو دفعتاً پکڑ لیا اور ان کو خبر بھی نہ تھی۔
Then We exchanged in place of the bad [condition], good, until they increased [and prospered] and said, "Our fathers [also] were touched with hardship and ease." So We seized them suddenly while they did not perceive.
وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَهْلَ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱتَّقَوْا۟ لَفَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَرَكَـٰتٍ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَـٰكِن كَذَّبُوا۟ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
اور اگر ان بستیوں کے رہنے والے ایمان لے آتے اور پرہیزگاری اختیار کرتے تو ہم ان پر آسمان اور زمین کی برکتیں کھول دیتے لیکن انہوں نے تکذیب کی تو ہم نے ان کے اعمال کی وجہ سے ان کو پکڑ لیا۔
And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allāh, We would have opened [i.e., bestowed] upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning.
